It comes from the legacy of Francisco Torres, who arrived in the United States from the Dominican Republic in the 1920s. Later adopting his mother’s maiden name, he became known as Frank Rebajes, a name now synonymous with American Modernist jewelry.
Rebajes was entirely self‑taught, beginning his craft with plumber’s tools and upcycled metal cans, which he transformed into imaginative sculptures. The success of those early creations allowed him to open his first shop in New York, where he developed the copper jewelry lines that would become his signature. His work quickly gained recognition, leading to museum exhibitions in the late 1930s and a prominent display at the 1939 World’s Fair.
As his reputation grew, Rebajes opened Rebajes Jewelry & Gifts on Fifth Avenue in 1942 — a sleek, modern storefront that reflected his design sensibilities. By the 1940s and ’50s, his jewelry was being sold in more than 500 stores across the United States.
At its peak, the Rebajes workshop employed over 100 artisans. While many pieces were stamped or cast and then assembled by hand, Rebajes personally designed and created every prototype, ensuring that each design carried his artistic vision.
