Tahitian pearls are cultivated in the black lipped Pinctada margaritifera oyster. The nacre produced by this oyster is darkly pigmented with tones such as brown, grey and black. This is unlike white pearls where the layers of nacre are colorless or very light beige. Natural Tahitian pearls are extremely rare. Because of this, they are also extremely expensive.
