Intaglio is a term used to describe the art of carving, engraving, or impressing a face or scene into a piece of stone or glass. Small intaglios have been used in jewelry making for centuries by many different cultures. They are found both in fine and costume jewelry. Unlike cameos, which are carved in relief so that an image protrudes, intaglios are engraved or impressed, so a scene or figure is hollowed out in the stone or glass. Oval intaglios are sometimes referenced as cameos, but that terminology is not correct, since the stone carving result is quite different. Intaglios were initially used for wax seals as far back as the Roman Empire. Signet rings soon followed and were worn as status symbols because of the difficulty in skillfully carving the hard stone from which they were made.
