Vintage Sterling Silver Australian Boulder Opal Necklace-
This Boulder Opal necklace is stunning. The color on this opal is an iridescent blue with a dark back ground. It's i nice size piece for everyday wear. I love the open swirl like design and the accent stones add just a bit of sparkle. Opal is the birthstone for October. Boulder opal is a rock that contains thin seams and patches of opal surrounded by or attached to its natural host rock. The cutter studies this rock and decides how to cut the best possible gem. That gem might be cut to display seams and patches of precious opal as they appear within their natural host rock. Alternatively, the gem might be cut in an orientation that presents a thin seam of precious opal as the face of the gem with its natural host rock as a backing.
Boulder Opals are only truly found in Australia and there are many Aborigine legends associated with this magical gemstone. One tribe has it that Opals were created by the scales of the Rainbow Serpent which fell to the ground as he set about shaping the mountains, lakes and rivers of Earth. Another says fire was discovered when a pelican pecked at an Opal and yet another myth has the Rainbow Creator coming to Earth and Opals being forged where his foot touched the ground.
